On Halloween and for the 3rd consecutive year, TOR will provide a volunteer massage team for the 2010 Marine Corps Marathon Team Fisher House runners. Our 18-member team will serve 295 marathoners and 10Kers post race at the Charity Village tent of Fisher House. It's going to be another fun-filled, fast-paced and rewarding day near the finish line at the Iwo Jima Memorial.

Plans are now underway to launch a massage therapy program for a domestic violence emergency shelter in downtown Denver. Several volunteers from our Denver VA Fisher House team will lead the efforts and seek recruitment support from Colorado School of Healing Arts, our school partner in Lakewood. A site visit this month to a newly minted Fisher House in St. Louis will start another effort to bring local professionals together to provide massage therapy to recovering vets and their caregivers.

An emerging partnership with local nonprofit Alternative Healing Network in San Diego brings promise to solidifying our program efforts in the city. Together, we will soon launch our massage therapy and yoga program at the downtown YWCA to serve women and families who are survivors of domestic violence and homelessness.

A new volunteer team has retooled our Fisher House program at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX to once again offer weekly sessions to residents and staff. Plans are underway to expand the team and phase in a sister program at the nearby Lackland Air Force Base Fisher House. This will mark the fourth TOR program in Texas including the new Ft. Hood Fisher House program and the successful launch of the second domestic violence program at SafePlace in Austin.

TOR has tentatively identified the test cities which will be involved in supporting individual IOF/OEF veterans and spouses of these veterans who are interested in attending and completing a certificate program at a local massage school as part of a civilian reintegration process. The development grant has yielded a strong interest in our school-to-work initiative will provide a unique opportunity for local corporations, military organizations, leading massage schools and community non-profits to contribute directly to education, training, accreditation and subsequent placement of student service members and their dependents.

May 2010
Volunteers from the VA Puget Sound Fisher House in Seattle and Madigan Army Medical Center Fisher House in Ft. Lewis, WA spoke of their rewarding experiences during recent site visits this month. A site visit to the new Boston VA Fisher House in West Roxbury, MA yielded considerable interest, and we hope to build a massage therapy team and begin working with freshly placed families early Fall.

January 2010
Our eighth Fisher House program was officially launched at the Denver VA. A strong team of volunteers and school partner, Colorado School of Healing Arts, helped make this project possible. A site visit to a downtown shelter in December could signal our third domestic violence program to possibly launch in the Summer.
